I am assuming that this unit is running on 120 volts. The hermetic (sealed compressor) has a thermal overload to trip if the comp draws too much current (many reasons for this). the overload will reset when it cools down giving the impression that the unit is working for short periods. So running then trip, running then trip.... could be start cap, start relay, compressor prob, excessive head pressure...etc. prob best to get some in the know to look at it.
Check the thermostat conditions Some times due to faulty thermostat it cause of compressor trip offCheck the thermostat conditions Some times due to faulty thermostat it cause of compressor trip off
If both pressures are even= bad comp valves/bad comp. Dirty coils could cause comp to overload and shut off. Make sure unit/filters = clean before all else and all fans are running. Any frost on lines from comp suggest low freon, dirty coils. If it's just old it could be full and clean and work for a while but still draw high amps which will shut the unit off.

Compressor is low on gas .
