Hey streetbal55 the easiest way would be to purchase a 3.5 external drive enclosure and insert the drive into that it will then connect to your system usually via usb.
This will allow you access all the data that is on the drive as a large usb device, and once you have regained all the data you want from it, then you can wipe it and use it as a portable device, saving work, games, music and so on to and have the option to move it to other systems in the future.
i am sure many will say if your system is of a simular connections,ie IDE, SATA, SATA2 etc, but with you saying your OLD system I am assuming it will not be compatible, and the option above will give you more functionality.
If your old hdd is a SATA drive you can install it as a secondary drive in your new computer. All you would need to do is install the drive, hookup the SATA data cable and power cable, & boot up. You can then move the data you need to your new hdd. If it is an older IDE drive you would need to set the jumpers to slave[sl] or cable select[cs] depending on what your new system requires. Hookup the ide ribbon cable and power cable from your power supply. Good luck & I hope this helps.
