Computer wont let me install new operating system
I just got an old DEll Dimension xps t700r. I tried to upgrade ram, hard drive and operating system. Every time I try to install os it stops and gives me error messages. I started with xp and thought that it not working may have had something to do with a damaged disk, so i tried my me disk. The same thing keeps happening. I get a blue screen it locks up or an error message. One of the error messages was oe: 0028: c004e609. Do I have a bad motherboard? I sure would appreciate some help with this.

Anytime you get the Setup cannot copy the file xxxx, press x to retry, etc..it can be caused by any of several problems such as a dirty or damaged CD/DVD ROM, viruses or RAM. Make sure all of your hard ware is working. Also third-party applications can cause it (software that did not come with windows). Given the age of your computer (it came out over 10 years ago) I would guess some hardware is not found or not compatable with XP. If you can find a WIN2000 disk then you may have some luck. Also, the microsoft website has a Hard Ware Compatibility List program that checks your computer to see if it is compable with XP. Just search for it on their website....bottom line is technology has come a long way and older computers can no longer work on newer Windows, that's how Windows makes money, they shut off the software to a computer after a while..please rate this solution
When you got the computer, would it boot up by itself? That's assuming you had an operating system with it. If it would boot up, the motherboard is ok.
You say you upgraded the hard drive and ram. What kind of hard drive did you choose? It should be IDE.
A computer that old will use IDE drives. Also, the motherboard will not automatically seek and find the hard drive. You have to go into set up and enter all the information it wants (Copy off the hard drive first) before it properly interfaces with the hard drive. after you enter everything into the spaces, it should recognize the drive.
You should check and see if you have two IDE cables connected to the motherboard and one to each the hard drive and the CD/DVD. If they are both on one cable, make sure the last connector is hooked to the hard drive, and the middle one to the CD/DVD. Also, whether or not they are on separate IDE cables, you should make sure the pins on each are set so that the hard drive is the master and the CD/DVD the slave.
If you can get into set up make sure the CD/DVD is chosen as the first in boot up order.
Last, ensure the file type is the right one for the O/S you are trying to install. If I remember correctly, you said you were trying to install NT 4.0. If I remember correctly, that runs on fat16 or 32. If so, it must be formatted in that.
But if you get into set up and the hard drive is not recognized, there's a big part of the problem. Also the master/slave relationship and the way those cables are hooked up are important.
Please write back and let us know how you're doing.
