Connecting MacBook or NetGear Router to Comcast
I have the NetGear 150 wireless router and can't seem to connect it to the Comcast VoIP modem they just provided. A Windows 7 computer connects with a direct connection to the modem and I get a good internet connection with that. I cannot connect either of two Apple PowerBooks to the internet with a wired ethernet connection. Comcast has been of no help so far; it seems they sell the service and want to charge $ 50 extra to allow you to make a proper connection to it. Oh yes, there's one more thing, the installer installed and exe program on the Windows system before connecting it up to the router. I suspect there's some setting's in that program that form a separate password authentication with the modem that the router and MacBook don't know how to do. So here's the question. What peculiarities has Comcast incorporated into their connection protocol? What information do I need to get from Comcast so that I can connect Apple products or the NetGear router to the modem? and, how do I enter them on the input screens? Any help provided would be much appreciated.

As a Comcast tech I assure you there are no special protocols used on a standard residential installation. There should have been nothing the tech downloaded to your pc most especially an executable file. I would assume he or she was making sure you were able to get to the customer installation page before they left. However if you have a router that the ports are not functioning on you are most welcome to have one shipped to your home for replacement. The wifi key provided on the bottom of the router is case sensitive most generally all in caps. If you dont have a spare cat5/6 cord to see if thats the issue ask them to send one with the new modem. Comcast does not charge you a fee for a truck roll when its faulty eqt. of their own. I have installed hundreds of apple products including the ones you are referring to as well as netgear routers they all work with the gateway Comcast provides the customer. Now if you want there is a tiny factory reset pin button at the very top of the gateway in the back you will need a paper clip to push it in. Hold it in there about 10-15 seconds and the gateway will reboot and return its setting to factory spec. try that first before calling customer service.
