Considering on buying a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant. the car at one time overheated and the head warped. they took it in and had it resurfaced. the car does not over heat and there are no leaks anywhere. however, it is making a ticking noise. i was told by the owner that is was piston slap. is there some way to eliminate that noise? what causes that? it sounds more like a ticking noise to me. is this something i should be concerned with?
Generally if it's a light weight ticking noise that follows the rpm's, that's valve noise. If it's valve tick, it will follow the rpm's, but will sound quiter when the rpm's go higher. It may just be heavier springs. It can also be what is refered to as piston slap. Piston slap can usually be heard when you accelerate the engine and stop when you decelerate.
Try a new timing chain and run a little tighter on the intakes.
Honestly, by which I travel 155K indicates that the vehicle you have already traveled, and the conditions under which lies in a personal opinion, I do not buy it. You must take into consideration everything you spend on minor repairs that eventually add up one after another, what could you save to add in the purchase of a vehicle in better condition.
Finally, the last word is you. Hope helped with this.
