This is a pretty common problem, especially on the coolpix range. Basically it means the lens has had some issue while driving in or out of the camera body, in some cases a simple tap on the camera side(not recommended by me) can fix the problem, in others you will have to send the camera to nikon to fix it but it will fall outside of warranty as its not considered a normal camera error.
