Could some-one please tell me how to work this out. its my practice paper for gcse level maths. the question is in one aternoon, whilst following his boat, jake walks nine times around the edge of the lake. How far does he walk approximatley? the measurments we get is that the lake measures 5 metres. circumference of a circle = D where d= diameter. Use 3 as a approximate vale for then I believe we have a sign for pie? Please help!! xoxo >

Ok, I willl simulate the thought process that goes into solving this kind of problems. I trust you will adapt it to your way of thinking.
Question: How much did he walk? Answer: Nine times around the lake. To find the total distance I need the length of one single lap Total distance = 9 times the length of a path around the lake.
I cannot go further until I find the length of the path around the lake Shape pf path : circle Circumference of a circle = diameter x π =π*D I know the diameter and I need π. I will use the suggested approximate value 3.
Solution Length of one lap = 3*5 m = 15 m Total distance = 9 * 15 m = 135 m
Hope I did not bore you with things you already knew.
Hope it helps. Thank you for using FixYa.
P.S. A lake with a 5 m diameter is not nuch of a lake. Shouldn't we call it a large puddle?

Question: How much did he walk?
Answer: Nine times around the lake. To find the total distance I need the length of one single lap
Total distance = 9 times the length of a path around the lake.
I cannot go further until I find the length of the path around the lake
Shape pf path : circle
Circumference of a circle = diameter x π =π*D
I know the diameter and I need π. I will use the suggested approximate value 3.
Solution
Length of one lap = 3*5 m = 15 m
Total distance = 9 * 15 m = 135 m
