Thomas, the oil light is on as a result of a signal from a pressure transducer that is seeing low oil pressure being developed within the engine. Unless the transducer is bad, it is telling you it is low on oil. A simple pulling of the oil dipstick while cold should show you a low oil level in the crankcase.
