If it is a generic pc eg compaq, dell etc, the drivers will be available for download for the companies website. Simply type in your model and make of pc (normally found on the front or top of your pc) into google. Follow the links. After it's downloaded double click to run the auto install then restart your pc.
Alternatively you can use the back up/ recovery disc.
If it's onboard sounds use the motherboard disc (that's the one with the letter/ numer gobbly gook on the front). Don't fret, just put it in the disc drive and click on the audio driver. Don't click on anything else or you may need to take your pc to a shop to get fixed.
All in all, pretty easier. Make sure you follow the steps and it's a process of elimination really.
If the sound is onboard (physicaly part of the MoBo) then you have to go to the manufacturers site, and download the various drivers and see which one works. if the card is an add-on then power down your unit (ground yourself to the tower chassis) take the card out and have a look for a distinguishing name. if you can't find one, then it gets very tedious. you have to start search for FCC identifiers on the chips, and usually do a sort of reverse look up for the manufacturer.
