I could be the 'insturment' or 'LPS' fuse or simply the dimmer switch. It isn't uncommon to mistakenly hit the dimmer switch at turn off the dash lights. First check to see if the dimmer switch isn't turned down. Then check the fuse. If these two are good, I would suspect the dimmer switch is the issue.
My 2001 S10 4.3 Auto 4x4 has the problem of dash lights and cluster lights not working when the headlamps are switched on by either the sensor or the switch itself; HOWEVER, 10% of the time they work just fine. That ruled out a fuse issue and the dimmer switch so I'm truly at a loss. The truck still has the factory radio but a remote start (that uses the original remote) was installed by a shop that *was* local to me in 2008. The dash light problem did not begin until 2011 and as I stated before, no rhyme or reason to their functioning sometimes. My 2001 S10 4.3 Auto 4x4 has the problem of dash lights and cluster lights not working when the headlamps are switched on by either the sensor or the switch itself; HOWEVER, 10% of the time they work just fine. Working 10% of the time does not rule out the fuse or the switch. Bad electrical contact at a partially blown fuse has caused many problems with diagnosing electrical issues. Pull the fuse out and inspect the link or better yet, replace it with a new fuse. Bad contact at the back of the switch (where is plugs in) could cause this issue as well as poor contact inside of the switch.Working 10% of the time does not rule out the fuse or the switch.
