DC Jack connection to motherboard
I had smoke come from near the DC Jack when trying to insert dc cable into jack.
I have removed the motherboard from my Gateway M350S laptop.
Does the positive pin on the jack contact the motherboard on the top, on the bottom, or both? Right now, the centerpin is shorted to ground somewhere.

No person knows this we do not have the xray views if this multilayer PCB mother board
ever do PCB lay out,I did for years.
but know that the feed throughs , called 'VIAs"
many do that and connect to other layers
or in your case the CAPs on the mobo are shorted
or vast other parts, did you strip down the mobo first to see if there are shorted modules/????
time for new or use mobo, no?
but good luck soldering there and for sure x10 that if the VIA"s are a wreck,
most times the center pin is Plus but not on all PCs made, 100,000 models, billions made.
Normally this would be an easy fix if it had a cable style dc jack, but this model is soldered to the mother board. I have done 100's of them and will tell you that unless you know how to use that soldering iron correctly then perhaps you may want to take it to a shop to have It repaired. Before you even start look at the location that the DC jack goes to make sure there is no damage to the mother board. That is not a normal DC jack either, there are 9 locations that need to be soldered. I would suggest to take it to a repair shop
