If the potentiometer is faulty, it should make a cracking sound while rotating it.
Open the radio in such way you can reach the internal boards while being switched on. You can remove the cable that goes to the frequency selector to make is easier.
Now switch it on and put the volume up. If you now hear a distorted sound at very low volume -> remove the cable that goes to the AUX board on the top mid-right side of the radio. If the volume changes for a slight moment replace the capacitor right next to the cable that goes to the AUX board.
It's a 16V 220uF capacitor.

The resistor of the potenciometer at volume is malfunction.
Change the potenciometer.
