The unit will not turn on if the internal temp sensor is below 40 degrees. Warm it with a hot rag or hair dryer, or bring the unit inside to warm up and it will turn on. Once the unit turns on for a minute or so, it will work fine outside.
This isn't the ideal solution, but it will work. I don't know why they don't want the smoker to turn on when it is cold out (unless they are worried that the quick change in temp will damage the heating coil).
Worked like a charm. It was 29 degrees outside, Thanksgiving morning and my smoker wouldn't turn on. Used my wife's hair dryer and voila, heat!! What really sucks is that I tried to contact Masterbuilt and their support lines were closed for the holiday. Does that make any kind of sense to you?? Webers, support is available 24/7/365. That's what I call Customer Service.Worked like a charm. It was 29 degrees outside, Thanksgiving morning and my smoker wouldn't turn on. Used my wife's hair dryer and voila, heat!! To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, and your symptoms, "digital readout says ''eaaf''".
Please note that the other "solution" - apparently a joke - was not something that I posted.
Blow dryer worked like a charm, thanks to everyone for the tip! Set the blow dryer on low pointed at the front of control unit, lit a small candle inside the smoker with door shut (don't even think this step is necessary). Went to shovel snow for 10 minutes, came back and the smoker was heating up! I left the time and temp set on the display, even though it had the EAAF error, and did not need to unplug/reset. Once it warmed up the control unit started the heating element and away we went! Saved my coworkers from missing out on the smoked, bacon-wrapped whole turkey for the Christmas luncheon tomorrow!
