Distorted sound when playing CD
Over time, I got intermittent distortion of sound on the CD player. Eventually, it was distorted all of the time. Sort of "jumpy" and "slippery". Everything else on the boombox works fine. The same audio CDs sound fine on other CD players.

I had exactly the same problem and ordered a new laser pickup costing about £40.00. A bit of a gamble and a little fiddly until you know how to do it. I also purchased a service manual to help me disassemble the mechanism. I am an electronics/radio engineer so I managed to do the job successfully but wouldn't recommend it to the average handyman without temperature controlled soldering iron desoldering pump and suitable tools including wriststrap and antistatic mat. The player now sounds better than it did ever with clear and brilliant audio. Total cost about £50.00 but worth it for me. If anyone feels that they can tackle this repair I can give further details on separating the servo board from the laser assembly.
I have 2 of the CDP-CX400 machines that do the same as you are describing. The only solution I was able to discover, with amazing results, was to use the optical connection. The sound is far superior. My challenge now is trying to get the crossfade between the two players to work via optical.
Good Luck!
