You don't have to remove the deck if you have a way to get under it. i have used car ramps, jacked mower up and used blocks any way that you do it be careful. if you don't have a way to get under the mower then yes the next best thing is to remove the deck. the one good thing about doing that is that you get a chance to look over things and if something should addressed you'll find. take your time make sure it's right.
