The torque converter bolts onto the rear of the engine via a flexi plate that has the ring gear for the starter motor.
You should be able to draw the engine forward so that the torque converter slides off the gearbox input shaft, without having to first remove the torque converter.
On reassembly you have to make sure that the torque converter slides onto - and seats properly - on the transmission input shaft.
If you have the equipment - and a bit of help - it's often easier to remove the engine and transmission as one complete unit. Then split the engine from the transmission when removed.

So yes, you will need to rotate the engine by hand to access these bolts one at a time to remove them. Remove all the plugs from the engine put a half inch ratchet on the bolt on the front of the crankshaft and rotate the crank to position the bolts on the torque converter.
