Does the propane tank need to be connected for the water heater to run
I got a used coleman hot water on demand portable water heater (camping), it clicks when I turn the knob but does not run. I have been trying it without putting a propane canister in. Could it be fuse, depleted battery or something else?

How is it going to heat the water without propane ?
if it is an instantaneous type it might work by the water flowing through it spins a cylinder that sparks that then ignites the gas. if it is a gas unit.
