If you did not get the old needle out, it may be blocking something. That old needle must be removed before you attempt to any further sewing. Try removing the bobbin case from the machine and looking in there to see if you can locate and remove the old needle. Sometimes, I've had to turn the machine sideways or upside down and shake it to dislodge the needle.

Open the bobbin area and hand rotate the handwheel while watching the needle action. If it is hitting, you should see it. If that is the case, the machine may be out of time and need service.
