down position
I have 3-way wall switches to lower and raise both the screen and projector from the ceiling. Is it necessary to return the switch to the neutral position, or can it be left in the up/down position without burning up the motor?

Most Projection screens which are electronically operated have a couple of switches inside, so that when the motor runs to the stop point, the switch activates and the motor stoops. The central point is there purely to allow you to have the screen at a custom height, say to make a 4:3 screen appear as 16:9 without loads of white space around the picture. Also, if the motor didn't stop, it wouldn't burn out at low point, as it would simply wind the screen back up the wrong way round the axle.
Hope that helps.
