Drive stopped working
Just bumped into a cinder block lightly aand the drive suddenly stopped working. Belt is in tact...took off front cowling over transmission area and everything seems in tact. However...the drive control cable seems to be slack and the plastic lever it's attached to at the transmission has no spring to it. Is this an indication there's a broken or disconnected spring or lever within the transmission housing that can be re-connected or replaced. Is this a fixable problem without a service call or tranmission assembly replacement? Your insight is appreciated. Than you.

There is an idler pulley inside the deck with a spring. The belt probably jumped of the idler which would result in the drive cable being slack. You can probably fix this yourself by re-routing the belt so that the idler with spring engages the belt. Depending on the condition of the belt you may have to losen all of the engine mount bolts so re-route the belt properly. I have had to take out all but ONE engine bolt (left loose) to install a belt.
If you need details on bolts / covers that need to be removed I need the whole model number to be of further asistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Your tranmission P/N 618-04377A that is NOW P/N 91804377A and has an internal yoke. When you bumped the cinder block most likely you damged the shifting yoke. I do not know of a source for just the shifting yoke itself. This leaves the consumer with the only option of having the transmission replaced and they run around $100.00 in cost for just the transmission alone.

Depending on your level of expertise... this is a tedious repair to replace the transmission. It can be done at home but not a task for beginners.

One more thought....that being the actual shifting arm. Take a look and see if the arm slid on the shaft. I.e.. partially sheared roll pin in the yoke shaft to arm mount or... allen screw that allowed the arm to rotate on the yoke shaft. It will be difficult to determine if it has shifted. Sometimes the only indicators are alignment of dirt or discolorations arm to yoke shaft. If your going to remove the arm for any reason at least scratch mark / scibe across the yoke shaft and arm lightly to make sure you at least put it back in the same position. If there is a roll pin in the arm to shaft mating area and you try to tap it out and nothing happens that is also an indicator that maybe the pin is either bent or partially sheared.
Wish ya the best.
