DVD drive (music, data, etc.). i've had a problem before where it didn't read CDs or DVDs and it turned out to be a corrupt registry (caused by some AV software that i had installed). this time, there is no error message, other than it asks to insert a disc when there is a disc already in the drive. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Go to the support.dell.com webpage, enter the service tag number, located on a label on the bottom of the laptop, and download the latest BIOS update and drivers for the CD/DVD drive. You can verify the drive type in Device Manager. Once you have downloaded the files, upgrade the BIOS, this will restart the system. Next, remove the CD\DVD in Device Manager and then install the new driver for the drive. When the driver has been installed, Open Device Manager and right click on My Computer at the top of the list and left click on Scan for changes. The drive will be detected adn installed with the new driver and the registry will be updated.
Good luck, and please let me know how it works for you.
