You can erase the contents of the drive or set the drive to overwrite when full. Erasing the drive is the equivalent of reformatting (you will not be able to recover the images easily).
To Erase/Format, enter the Menu system and select Hard Drive Setup (seventh line in the list). Press Enter, then go to HDD Format (fourth item in the list) and press Enter. Then enter your password (set up under System Setup) but the default password is 111111, if it is on. If you entered the correct password, the screen will flash HDD Formatted 3 times. Press Menu to exit the menu. (If the incorrect password was put in, Incorrect Password will flash.)
To overwrite, again go to Hard Drive Setup then select the first item, Drive Full. Press Enter to toggle Overwrite On or Off. You will be able to recover the images until they are overwritten.
The hard drive is removable. However, without knowing why the HDD is not being detected, I can't tell if the drive went bad or the controller. The first thing I'd try is to eject the HDD and then reinsert the unit.
The drive is in a removable box; so you need to pull that box and then swap the drive with the same size (2.5" probably but I've never had the drive fail before without other symptoms) and type (IDE/SATA). You could also try a new swappable enclosure.
BTW there is a 3-year warranty on Speco DVRs.
I wish I could be of more help.
