In one respect, the patient cable is the most important part of the system; it is most frequently at fault when the machine fails to operate properly.
Several different patient cable configurations are used in ECG recording. Some are constructed of two pieces that plug together. While others are one piece.
Two piece units are generally more expensive initially but often prove more economical in the long run because breakage most frequently occurs at the electrode connector end of the cable.
This end can be replaced at a cost that is somewhat lower that the cost of a one piece cable.
Additionally a two piece cable allows the use of differents types of electrodes.
