The breaker trips off because there is a short in the control panel of the heater. Since it trips when you try to start it it means that the most likely part to have failed is the sparker. The unit will have to be opened, the control panel inspected and the sparker (and whatever else has failed) replaced. This is gas we're talking here, nothing to joke about. If you haven't done that before then call a pro, don't touch it yourself.
The thermostat must be powered to work - no power to it = no clicking.
