Electrolux central vac powerhead (N106M) frequently tripping built-in circuit breaker. It seems to be only when pushing in one direction, why would the motor draw more current in one direction? (it doesn't seem to be related to carpet "grain")

Have you checked the roller brush. Thread, string, and hair wrapped around the brush will create stess on the motor, resulting in overheating and shut off. Clean the brush and try.
