You may need a driver. Download it from the manufacturer's website.
Or; right-click on MY COMPUTER icon, choose PROPERTIES, then click on the DRIVER tab, and click Update. Windows should install on or tell you that the one you have is ok.
IF that does not solve it; these disks notoriously ****... (die alot) it could be your drive. I have had 4 maxtors drop dead on me. Try your drive on another computer; if it is not recognized there; then it is your HDD- hope it's in warranty.
If another computer CAN recognize; then go back to DEVICE MANAGER and right click all your USB connections (under serial bus controllers) one at a time and UNINSTALL. DOn't worry about the warnings, just UNINSTALL. DO NOT DELETE!!
Restart your computer; and WINDOWS should reinstall them for you. Try plugging in your drive again.
IF no worky- its dead or your USB cable is old. Try a new USB.
My money, if it is a Maxtor, is it is croaked. You will need to either pay through the nose to get your files recovered; or find someone who knows how to take it apart; install it into a desktop bus internally and copy your files from there.
Good luck.
