Massage the shutter with an earbud bylifting up the mirror by hand. Do not push or bend.
A desperate last meaasure and will invalidate any warrenty!!!
We have a temporal solution to this problem,a temporal workaround!
Turn off the camera, then set the exposure to +5 (on a D40).
This overexposes the underexposed picture.
Also set lighting to auto, and set the flash to +1
I don't know how I removed the 'shutter'-message; but when fiddling around with the device it seemed to dissapear after a while (after turning the device on and off).
This did the trick for us for now.
Dark pictures can't be taken.
It at least should help you take standard pictures,or outside in bright light!
edit on previous comment:
It's a damaged shuttermechanism.
Seemingly Nikon D40 and D70 use a very weak shutter system, that can easily get damaged by a small fall or shock, even if the casing and rest of the device seem fine.
The D40X, D60 and D80 seem to use a different shutter system.
I don't know if the newer system is more shockproof then the older though...
