The error message is when the 'Brew unit' is malfunctioning' I read a few tips on how to clean the Brew unit and decided to have a go at rectifying the problem.
There are many star screws to undo to get into the machine but in hindsight it seems that the first panel to remove is the back panel which is bit of a pain as the two screws are actually mini bolts and I could not find a socket tiny enough to remove them, so I used the tip of a pair of cutters to turn the screws,
If you systematically remove the panels the front panel becomes the challenge as there are loads of tiny pipes connected to it. If you gently ease the accessible ones off and take care as some are held in place with a small spring clip you finally have the challenge of the pipe on the steam knob. The whole assembly can be unclipped and tucked out of the way. At this point the screws that hold the Brew unit are visible and the unit can be removed having lastly removed the final pipe and spring clip to the unit.
I thourghly cleaned the Brew unit and wondered what turned the large metal cog that moves the plunger up and down. Alas there was no drive cog visible and with the aid of a flashlamp I looked into the compartment and saw that the drive cog had broken in two. You cannot buy this cog separately. you must buy a drive motor complete at a cost of
