Every few hours, generally on fallout new vegas, my hp g72-259wm shuts down and wont turn back on for an extensive period of time (many many hours) but when i press the power button to turn it on, the light next to the port for the AC adapter flashes red and stuff like 3-5 times and stops... i dont think its a software problem, it seems to run fine for hours, but i dont think its over-heating either, or maybe it is... it was a refurbished though. i dont have much time left on my warranty... what might my problem be? also when it does power back on, it doesnt tell me it thermal shut down like it normally would... what can i do?

From your description it sounds like the main motherboard is intermittent, and it can only get worse, with the warranty you have left I would not waste any time in returning the laptop. I would demand a replacement simply because you are dealing with a high intermittent problem that will be difficult if not impossible to track down, and even if they find it you will never be sure if the computer is really fixed.
