A lot would depend on the radio and the microphone being used.Stock microphones will sound low, with a stock one take very close and right across the face of the mic. Also stock radios are likely to sound muffled or stock.Depending on the radio the modulation inside may be able to be turned up or if it has a mic gain on the front turn that up.Some of the small Cobra and Uniden radios use a 1000 ohm microphone (the element impedance just like speakers).Changing the mic for a older 500 ohm mic and wiring it for that radio will make a large difference in audio and how the radio sounds on the other end. There are other options as well but I would need to know brand and model number.
