The muffler discharges out the front as you would see it from the seat. The white smoke in the exhaust when loaded indicateds that you may be having trouble with oil and vacuum inside the engine. At best requires partial disassembly. This may get expensive. I recommend careful consideration regarding the decision to try to repair or to choose to replace.
