This really sounds like a problem with the contrast. Try this: turn the calculator on; press the second key, and then press and hold down. This she reduce the dark contrast. Good Luck
Okay; make sure if you haven't already that you have not adjusted the contrast too dimly. It does not seem likely that the buttons to adjust the constrast would work but the rest would all fail.

Just to add on to what was said... you don't go [2nd] + v + v + v , but you're suppose to go [2nd] + v + [2nd] + v + [2nd] + v... etc.
