external drive all become unrecognizable. is there a known problem with this software and windows 7? is there a way to configure so it works?

Try running the program in compatibility mode for an older version of windows such as vista or xp. If it still causes the usb problems it may have to do with outdated usb drivers. Try running the program in safe mode and see if that works.
If it will only work in safe mode and your usb drivers cant be changed, then you should just buy a new webcam for install a generic webcam driver for it.
