Fan won't turn on or if it does turn on you can't adjust the speed from the remote or pull chain. The problem seems to be intermittent. The fan is about8 years old and has worked perfectly up until now

You probably need a new receiver. Make sure the fan is set on high with the pull chain so the remote works correctly.
