fax modem model NSMODX2. I have removed all other modems in the system. Everytime the modem fails and I replace it it connnects fine. Is there a possibility my motherboard is faulty?

A mother board is a big thing to replace. you may want to just buy another computer if thats the case. it may also be the way it hooks up. is it a card. if it's a card thta slot maybe shorting it out. if so try a diffrent slot. my best advice is move away from dial up all together.
