Consider a Honda if you are buying a small portable. I have been in the business for 12 years and own my own company. Honda makes a good unit that holds up better than any other, but you will pay a little more up front. If you are in the market for a home stand-by I would also recommend buy one that cost a little more up front. The cheaper one will cause you more expense and troubles in the long run, and in an emergency if it doesn't work or last it is good for absolutely nothing. I recomment Kohler or Onan.
Get a generator that is rated for the amount of power that you can determine you will need.Look at the labels on lighting, appliances, and equipment you plan to connect to the generator to determine the amount of power that will be needed to operate the equipment. Choose a generator that produces more power than will be drawn by the combination of lighting, appliances and equipment you plan to connect to the generator including the initial surge when it is turned on.
