Fedders A6X05F2A fan has stopped working, and therefore air conditioning has stopped. Could the fan be the problem (or just the dirt and gunk I have to clean out?)?

Honestly, it could be either one. But, to save on costs, clean out "dirt and gunk" first. Be sure the unit is turned OFF and unplugged before attempting any cleaning. FYI - Hosing it out does not count as cleaning. And could do more damage than good.
