Fender Frontman 65R Solid State guitar amp. After a while whether playing loud or not,it cuts out. Switched on when cold,it works again with no issues at all,but it starts cutting out again when hot. Same thing every time. Really hard to locate the problem. Similar issues seems to be familiar with the bigger Frontman 212 also. Obviously common for the models. Has anyone had the described problem, and found a solution ?
There is a protection thermistor in the circuit to keep it from over-heating, this is why it works again when it cools. Check and make sure you are not covering any ventilation holes, or if the unit has a fan, make sure it is working.
It sounds like maybe a bad ground or solder joint. What I would do is get some freeze spray,I think you can get it at radio shack. Take the unit apart. Turn it on,let it warm up. Wait for it to cut out, take the freeze spray and try to spray it on componets that are get hot. Anything that has a heat sink.Any area you think is getting hot. Hit in a small area at a time. When ever the amp come back on,wait for it to cut out and do it again, to see it comes back on. Now try to look at the solder joints in that area. If they are dull looking they are likely the cause. The spray can be used on the trace side of the board or the compoent side. Hope this is helpful.
Check and make sure the amp is well ventilated in the back. This is where it can overheat. Also, make sure you have a steady, clean electric current powering the amp.
