Flash causes camera to not shoot
The flash turns on alright and it looks like it is working. However, when I put it on the camera, not only does the flash not work, the camera is also unable to shoot. How do I fix this?

I've had a similar problem with my Nikon D200, I think it was the fact that the camera didn't receive a ready signal from the flash. I think your flash might not be supporting the appropriate xTTL from Nikon. Try on A or M mode and see if it still doesn't fire.
