The first time (and every other time after that) that i have plugged it into my USB port it loads the software to the point where i get the bulleted list of all the things i can do ( view and edit my videos etc..) Then i get an error message saying that the program has encountered an error and needs to close.

I have a brand new laptop, running windows XP. I have all the lastest updates
I tried trouble shooting it by installing it manually via the system folder.
I tried restarting my computer,& shutting down my computer

Is this a defect in the product or am i doing something wrong
