Fusty fishy smell coming from saniflo unit
We have recently bought a house that has a saniflo unit fitted in the downstairs loo, it has a fishy type smell that seems to come from the unit. The bizarre thing is that it seems to come and go. Judging by the clenliness level of the rest of the house I doubt very much that the unit have ever been cleaned. What is the simplest way to clean/flush through the unit?

You need to check and see if the unit cycles immediately after you flush. After that, try tapping on the outside of the unit with you hand (thump it) to see if the unit will cycle again. If it does, it is not emptying completely. The issue is then with the air cycle valve.
If it seems to be cycling ok, go to Home Depot or Lowes and look for the Zep (Brand) enzyme drain cleaner. Put the enzyme cleaner down the sink (if one is connected) and let it sit for 24 hours. This will help clean out any sludge in the unit. You might try the enzyme treatment once a week for a month and see if that helps.
Normally, I have found the smell comes from the units not cycling properly and completly emptying the units to the proper level. They stay overfull and generate the smell.
If its the air cycle valve, let me know and I will tell you how to address that issue.
