Fy5318 breaking thread on multiple layers of material, how to adjust?
When sewing thru canvas binding and several layers of material, thread frays until it breaks. Had a sewing machine mechanic spend several hours trying to adjust machine but still doing it.

If the thread is fraying, then the incorrect needle is being used.

It may be one or more of the following:
Needle size...go up a size with the needle.
Thread type... Use a heavy grade Nylon thread that is for upholstery. Note use the same in the bobbin...adjust bobbin tension to match the heavier thread, if necessary.
Stitch length... use a bit longer stitch length...7-10 st per inch
To set bobbin tension...hold the bobbin case in the palm of one hand..have the bobbin showing...pull on the thread coming off the bobbin case...the bobbin case should start to come up off your hand, and will stand on end...then the thread should come out smooth and evenly. Once you have the bobbin case adjusted, readjust the upper thread to get a good stitch. Test the upper thread tension...with the hopping foot down...pull on the thread coming off the needle...the needle should start to flex/bend, but then the thread should pull out straight and smooth...both bobbin and upper will have very little drag to the tension. If you get loopies or pokies on the underside...tighten the upper 1/2 a turn and try again. Once the bobbin is set, you shouldn't have to adjust it again, unless you use a different weight thread
Either the thread is old, or the tension is to tight.
or there is a bind some where in the line layout.
