Had the same problem as you, right-click on "king.exe", properties, "compatibility" (hope it's called so even in english, have german vista ^^), set compatibility-mode on XP SP2, checkbock "resolution 640x480", "deactivate visual designs" and that thing with the DPI (don't know how to translate xD).
It worked on my vista, hope it'll do it at yours too =)
Here is 1 dirty and bizarre, but tested solution. Just before you launch the game, set WinRAR to pack some 200-400 MBytes of data. Run the game while WinRAR is keeping your PC somewhat busy. I've tested this several times and it works for me so far. WinRAR is just an example, there must be different ways to put a CPU under constant load for a short period when you need to start this game.

This game was designed for slower processors!! try installing it on an old PC.
