Aha! I found this on another forum and it worked for me!
I had some luck using a trick I read on the yahoo geotrax group. Make sure you have good batteries and hold the controller in the forward movement position. Then run the train forward repeatedly on a surface with friction (I used my pant leg). I got two old trains to work again, and I'm hoping to fix one more.
The theory is that this works because it uses a magnetic coupling instead of a direct drive.
It only took me one super gentle swipe across my leg! Better than smacking/bashing them because that can knock wires loose and stuff. Hope this helps everyone! :D
