Hard Drive dropped and not recognized by the computer;
Hi there. I just dropped the External Hard Drive of my girlfriend accidentally from a table about 30 cm. high. It is a BUFFALO Bumper Body HD-PS120U2(japanese brand). When I plug it at the USB port of any computer / laptop it does not recognize the device. The procedure is the following: it makes an initial "boosting" noise as if it was running and shows the green pilot light for one or two seconds, but then gets suddenly stuck and the light turns to yellow. I fear that it is definitely broken and does not work anymore. Unluckily, she did not make a backup copy and would like to recover some important data stored there... So here it comes the big question: any useful tip to at least make it run once again? Thanks for your help Alex

Bad news is, it sounds bad. Good news is, you can take drive to local shop and have the data recovered at a reasonable price. As for me I like Digilink. You should get a agreement with whomever you choose that, if they don't recover anything you don't pay, or at least a fixed price. More than likely they will be able to recover whatever is on there. Above all go to a reputable dealer that has been around a while and will be there next week. Good luck.
I imagine the armature/read head is crashed and/or stuck. Nothing that I would recommend doing on your own. The disks inside can sometimes be removed and put in a new/old drive just to get everything backed up, but I would recommend having a reputable computer tech do that sort of work.
