Have a 1995 GMC Suburban, 2500 with a 700R transmission. A year ago our daughter drove it and said it wasn't going into gear. Low and behold it was bone dry on the fluid. It wouldn't drive, but would go into reverse. We thought she blew the tranny so we've parked it since. Today my husband decided to start the rebuild and dropped the pan - no shavings! The fluid was dark, but no metal shavings at all. Did she indeed blow it? Or could this be an easier fix?
Dark fluid usally means that the clutches are worn. The black dust from the worn clutches makes the fluid dark. You could try changing the filter and fuild, but most likely the damage is done.
