This is a recurring problem with all Direct Vent Gas Appliances. Whether it be a Direct Vent Gas Fireplace or a Direct Vent Heater like you customer has. Not to mention, that they are very inefficient.
Unfortunately, there are only 2 solutions: Cover the direct vent outside when not in use. Of course, that means remembering to uncover it before each use. The other solution and the most efficient is replacing it with a properly sized Vent-Free Gas Heater or perhaps a Vent-free Gas Fireplace depending on what type and size room the present heater is in.
The following website as a lot of information o these types of products and how to properly size them.
