Have a new richmond water heater.there was no hotwater.i checked the water heater pilot was not lit.i relight it, it lite.turn to temp settings pilot went out.relit it againmade a explosion bom sound

The explosion was from a build up of gas that was not properly ignited by the pilot light or was leaking into the combustion box when there was no pilot light
there is a serious problem in the gas control system that needs urgent professional assistance to fix
