You don't have to use the special tool, you can use 2 eyeglass screwdriver flat heads or 1 if your good. use the blade to push the tabs on the handle in, then just yank it free. You have to remove the forward and reverse buttons before you can take the valve out. To release the buttons there is a small clip on the inside center of the button. Push the button out that you want to remove then push in the clip and pull out the button. I just did it.
