Have netwave base G4 router connected ot cable modem-slow internet connection the last couple of days. iTouch and laptop get a connection but very weak and won't download anything. checked wiht cable folks first, did the unplug router, unplug modem etc. Speed test was 3.39 download and .24 upload. have never updated the router firmware

Having slow Internet connection does not mean that there's a problem with the router. Wireless routers have wireless channels that you could select from 1 to 11. Most routers are set to 5 which is the neutral.
You may want to change the channel first of your router and see if that would speed up your Internet connection.
Second, wireless devices such as cordless phone, cell phone and microwave oven that are running on 2.4Ghz frequency might interfere with the signal of the router. You may want to avoid that and put it away from the router
Third, try to bypass the router and connect the modem directly to a computer. And then, perform a speed test. If you got the same problem, then there could be a problem with the cable modem. You may contact your ISP for it.
Last, if you find out that the router is the problem, contact the manufacturer for firmware upgrade.
